Reading and Reading and Reading

So I arrived back home two weeks ago today and since then I've just been hanging out at home. It's weird because Mom works for most of the day until the kids come home and then the kids are home and it's kind of crazy because everyone else is still in school. I've managed to stay semi-productive actually. I've signed on with a couple of temp agencies, cleaning up, doing some scrapbooking, seeing friends, and can you believe it: reading. Granted I read a whole lot during the school year and some of it was pretty good, but it wasn't stuff that I randomly picked up and said "Hey this looks good!" and then proceeded to read it. Since I've been back I've already read two books and am well on my way to finishing a third.

John wanted to go to Borders before his camping trip this weekend and of course I'm more than willing to go on a trip to a bookstore and while John didn't find anything he liked (music or otherwise--what you usually buy books in a bookstore?? Go figure) I bought his gift card from him and bought three books. I went more for the classics this time and purchased "Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton, "Dracula", and "Wuthering Heights." I'm currently in the middle of "Step, Ball, Change" by Jeanne Ray and I just finished "In the Land of Second Chances" by George Shaffner which I LOVED!! I would recommend it to anyone; it's full of laugh-out-loud moments, sweet characters, and a few tear-jerking chapters. It's a lot like other books I like in the way that it's just about a small town where you get to know the people. (It reminded me of the Mitford series, the Miss Julia series, and some of Fannie Flagg's books). I LOVE READING!!!

Other minutiae of the past two weeks: I've started running. I know--it's a shocker, but it is true. Throughout winter semester I wans't eating too great and I just felt sick and gross all the time, so I thought "I'm going to do something about this!" Weight-lifting is actually my favorite form of exercise, but I don't want to pay a bunch of money to join a gym here or anything, plus I'd have to drive somewhere--bleh. So one of my only other alternatives was running and one of the big pros for me on this one was the fact that you can run anywhere. You don't need a membership or anything--just a pair of tennis shoes and a shower waiting when you're done. I didn't really know how to start on this one because I'm really out of shape and I say that with all sincerety and truthfulness. My fitness level is negative six. Katelyn had started reading this book at school (recommended by another girl on the floor) called "The Beginning Runner's Handbook" which talks about the psychology of running, what to wear, where to run, how to stay motivated, among other topics. At the end it presents a 13 week program that will increase your fitness and it starts you off really slow. I just started this week and I already feel that it's easier to run. This week I ran for 1 minute and walked for 2 nine to twelve times. They have a whole schedule for you and you only run three times a week!! I'm glad they start slow but I'm still definitely pushing myself. I've decided that I want to want to run if that makes any sense. I want to be able to run for extended periods of time and stay in good shape. It's also easier for me when I have the schedule and work out (warm-up and cool-down exercises included) right before me instead of having to just make it up. Fitness is a big goal for me this summer.

Well I'm signing off and (I know I've said this before) I'll try and blog more frequently--it's just been nice being home :) (But I find myself really missing Jessie, Timm, and Bella, and LOST nights with Diana and Lou!)

same old, same old with some impulsiveness mixed in

So I know I haven't posted in a while, but really my life has been the same--school, school, work, school, and building excitement for going home. Oh and did I mention school?? I'm done with all my finals but one and that's nice and I go home on Saturday. Dad drives out on Thursday and then we hit the road a couple days later! Yay!

I can't believe my freshman year of college is already over--I feel like I'm more officially in college now. Now that I've survived a year away from home, taking harder classes, and having to make all new friends, I feel officially collegiate.

So the past week and a half all I've been doing is schoolwork and last night I was completely fed up with it. Thus, I decided to convince Katelyn to take an impulse trip to the dollar theater and see "Music and Lyrics." I was so glad we went to see it because it was exactly what I needed. The movie was hilarious and cute (I love Hugh Grant) and my impulsiveness carried on into the concessions where I bought a $3 small (aka minuscule) popcorn and $2.75 small (aka kiddy kiddy size) Sprite--it was such a fun and definitely needed break! Plus, after we got back I impulsively bought the soundtrack to the movie which is way awesome.

Today was our last Sunday with our ward and it was definitely bittersweet. Most of the guys are going on missions and everyone got released and it was just kind of weird to have it be officially over. I will still see a lot of the girls next year because I'm taking my lit classes with a few of the girls on my floor and that will be fun, but all of our ward stuff today seemed so definite. It was nice though in sacrament meeting because we had another testimony meeting and this time I was ready and was third! It was a wave to the pulpit, but I did get there in good time!

Another bittersweet part about today was the realization that this was my last Sunday dinner with Jessie, Timm, and Bella, as they are moving to Charlotte, NC over the summer. I'm excited for them, but I will miss them a lot next year. Thanks so much for being here for me this year guys--it made all the difference :)

Well, I felt I needed to post after almost two weeks of not and now I need to shower and go to bed to wake up to finish the week and then GO HOME!!

Newsletter Fiasco

For the past three or so weeks, I've been working on a group newsletter project in my print publishing class. For the whole time, me and this other girl, Lindsey, have really been doing the whole thing and that's not the problem. The problem is that Dain (our other member) doesn't have a lot of time and I get that, but what's frustrating for me is that whenever we give him something to do, however small and not so time consuming, he drops the ball and flakes out. Last week for instance, we gave him the file to copyfit over the weekend and he did the wrong one. Good grief. So Monday, we asked him to take the file to the press building and get it printed--really not a big deal. However, he waited until yesterday afternoon (the project was due this morning at 10 o'clock) and then called Lindsey saying, "Well they can't get it printed until tomorrow and I can't pick it up tomorrow morning, so you and Charlotte will have to work something out." You've got to be kidding me. So Lindsey and I form a scrambled Plan B and she picked me up this morning at 7:30 (ug) and we drove to the press building to make sure we knew where it was and then she drove herself to her 8 am class. I then drove her car back to the press building and went to see if it was printed. My heart stopped when the man in charge said it wouldn't be ready for 6 days and fortunately, he thought my project was for a different section. I swear it was divine inspiration for this random worker who spoke up out of nowhere and said, "Oh, is his name Dain?" (referring to the person who dropped it off) and I said, "YES!!!" So it took about 15 minutes to print it and cut it and stuff so that all went okay, but then I had to try and park Lindsey's car . . .

She showed me where she usually parks it and so I headed back there, but to my intense dismay, there was no spot to be found. No spot--anywhere. I drove around the side streets and nothing. I drove around for half an hour trying to find a place to park and I was cursing Dain while trying to hold back tears of frustration, when I turned into a parking lot that I'd been through at least twice before, on the off chance there was a spot. There were a few people coming back from 8 o'clock classes and there were already people stalking them in cars, intending to snag the parking spots. I was literally at my wit's end when all of a sudden, a car right in front of me pulled out of their parking spot, leaving it wide open just for me! Tender mercies I'm telling you. :)

Anyway, apart from that the day has gone pretty well. (Note: Dain didn't even come to class today and if I were him I probably wouldn't either because I'd be afraid of the anger exuding from me and Lindsey). However, today has been a bit of a downer compared to last Wednesday which was amazing! Last Wednesday I got a 94 on my English paper, found out about a sweet student deal on the Adobe Creative Suite (which I purchased last Thursday), and just had a most excellent day. Oh well, I guess every Wednesday can't be amazing. If that were the case, it wouldn't be so amazing! I'm glad I have amazing Wednesdays (or any other day for that matter) every once in a while when I need them the most!

A Cultural Critic

In my English class we have periodical group presentations where a group showcases a certain school of literary theory, giving the basic tenets of the theory, its history, and how it's applied to literature. Today's presentation was on cultural criticism which "deems all forms of expression equally worthy of examination" and "argues against a distinction between 'high' culture and 'low' culture. The Iliad is no better than Harry Potter and both can be legitimately compared to each other." When you apply the theory, you "seek to relate rather than rate."

I really like this theory because it puts everything on the same level and I really like pop culture, frequently incorporating it into class discussions. I often make connections from literature to "24," "The Office," "Harry Potter," and other various icons of 21st century culture. Everyone laughs, but sometimes I regret voicing those connections because I feel stupid or shallow, even though I do understand the larger literary significance. A lot of times I say things out loud, immediately regretting that decision, however today in class I was completely justified. The people presenting cultural criticism used me as an example. They said I was the perfect example of a cultural critic because I can tie pop culture to any kind of literature and so I felt validated in my love of pop culture. I'm not stupid or shallow--I'm a cultural critic!

Quick P.S.: In light of my new status as a pop culture afficionado, I can't believe Gina's boot from American Idol tonight; Jessie and I really thought that trampy Haley would get sacked. Alas, it is not so and much to everyone's dismay, Sanjaya is STILL on. Good grief.

Harry Potter, Creative Motivation, and Pseudo Spring Break

The cover for the 7th Harry Potter book was released today!!! It's so cool and I love finding clues in the covers. Last semester I even wrote a critical analysis on the Harry Potter book covers, dissecting their many intricacies and hints. I just had to share that exciting bit of information because let me tell you: I'm stoked!!

So the other night I was talking to my mom and she was telling me about this scrapbooking book she got for Christmas (The Big Picture or something like that) and how it revolutionized her way of thinking about scrapbooking. She's started a scrapbooking club and they have a different project each month (I'll join their ranks next month!). With Mom telling me all about her new perspective, I've been really excited to do likewise! What they're all doing is a "Month in the Life of (insert your name here)" and I've decided to do April. Starting on Sunday, I'm going to jot down just the little things I do and I'll keep receipts, to do lists, little handouts, maybe even a candy wrapper or two--you never know what could come in handy! I'm going to have an envelope for everyday and then when I get back for the summer I'll scrapbook it all! Also, I'm going to take my camera with me everyday and try to take pictures of the random minutiae of my days. I figured April would be a good month to record because it's more indicative of my life right now than anytime during the summer. I'll have regular school, projects, finals, moving, plus a few days at home! Perfect combination of my life! Also I'm going to do the "Me Album" with mom's group in May--I can't wait to get started!

So it's unfortunate that BYU has no spring break (a lack I felt more so a month ago when I was suffering from Mid-Semester Burn Out) however, Emily is on her spring break and came out with Jacquelyn to visit me and Jessie! I'm so excited! She got in yesterday afternoon and after work, Jessie and Emily picked me up, bringing super good and super big Iceburg shakes and then we went back to Jessie's and hung out while watching American Idol (can you believe Sanjaya's hair?!?!!?#^%$& That was the first episode I've seen this season and I couldn't believe how stupid Sanjaya is). Tonight I'm sequestering myself so I can finish a research paper, but tomorrow we're meeting up with a family from home who are here to do some missionary shopping for their son and then I'll show Emily around campus a bit, show her my dorms, and we'll hang out there a bit until 9-ish when my friend Blake will pick us up and we'll all go to the Malt Shoppe. I'm most looking forward to the weekend when I'll spend the night at Jessie's and Timm's and have fun over conference weekend. So even though technically I don't have spring break, I'm blowing off school as much as possible to have a fun time this week! Yay for visiting siblings!

*note: red letter day for me--I'm actually publishing a post the same day, nay even the same afternoon, as I started it!!*

Time Warp and Rainy Smell

College is a time warp I swear. All of a sudden it's the 26th, I haven't posted in three weeks, and it feels like yesterday was a week ago Sunday. Anyway, my life has been the usual: school, work, not much of a social life the past few weeks because of tests and the like. Classes end in a little more than 3 weeks (!@#$*&) and then Dad is going to drive over and help me move out. After this week, I should be set until finals. I took my second American Heritage test on Monday, wrote an English paper Tuesday, had a dance test Thursday, been working on a group newsletter project in print publishing, and I took my third Book of Mormon test on Friday. Phew.

In a different vein, I've loved the nice weather!! I've been wearing capris and skirts and sandals and I love how it feels like spring! When I walk back to the dorms I see blankets spread out all over the grass with people sunbathing, playing games, studying, cuddling (a bit uncomfortable for me sometimes), and then there are the three or four groups tossing a frisbee around. The one odd thing about this though--it is most perplexing--is that all of a sudden, the girls seem to think it's okay to strut around in tiny tank tops and underwear shorts. I know--go figure. In sacrament meeting our bishopbric reiterated the importance of and the still-present Honor Code and I did notice a difference last week. Last Wednesday it was so nice because it was kind of rainy for part of the day and every time I went outside I could smell the rain and the air had that crisp feel about it. I loved it!! Rain is by far the best weather ever.

The weekend was super nice and I got a chance to just crash after such a hectic week. I watched a bunch of "24" on Friday and on Saturday I slept in a bit, showered, did a bit of homework, went to the Panda Express with Katelyn for lunch, headed up to campus and spent a while in the card aisle in the Bookstore, worked with my publishing group, went to Target with Jessie, and then headed to the Vocal Point concert! I'm glad I was so productive and was still able to feel relaxed and at ease. The Vocal Point concert was AWESOME (like the last one!). They did their primary song medley and at one point in the number had the whole audience doing the motions to "Do As I'm Doing"--so much fun! It was a long concert (a little over 2 hours), but I was having so much fun I didn't even notice!

Once again I finish this post almost a week after I started (requiring some information changing ie-I am taking my Book of Mormon test to I did take my Book of Mormon test). Oh well, I'm glad I actually finished it. Hopefully I can be a bit better now that school is taking a bit of a breather for me. So glad I can catch my breath!

sliding into the home stretch

I only have 6 more weeks of class left as of tomorrow! I was looking at my schedule for the next six weeks and I have SO much going on I don't know how I'll get it all done. I have yet another American Heritage midterm in two weeks and I have to take my second Book of Mormon test tonight. These next six weeks are going to be so busy and I have so much to do and the worst part is that I am completely lacking motivation. I didn't have too much homework over the weekend which was really nice, but at the same time I spent a big chunk of my day avoiding the homework I did have (which included studying for the Book of Mormon test . . . ). I get into this rut every year around this time when I have zero motivation and not only do I not have motivation, but I have total apathy as well. I don't do my work (or I don't do it well) and I don't even care--that's the worst part. I feel like I'm coming out of this funk a little bit, but I'm still a bit personality-less and apathetic. This funk is definitely not helped out by the fact that I've been a bit homesick the past couple of days. Last semester the homesick factor really wasn't a problem because I went home for Sarah's baptism and there was the week I went home for Thanksgiving. This semester I'm not going home at all, which is fine most of the time, but these past couple of days I've been pretty down. I did get to talk to my family last night though (for the first time in about 2 weeks because of the school musical that consumed everyone) and that did a lot to lessen the stress of missing people.

When I was talking to my dad, he posited the plan that he drive over at the end of April to help me move out and then he could drive me back! I love it and I really hope that can happen! It's weird to me that none of my immediate has seen my room or met my friends, so that would be way cool if Dad could come out to pick me up. Most of the time he'd actually be here, I'd be taking finals, packing, or moving, but he has family out here he hasn't seen in a while, so he'd have fun while I get myself ready to come home for the summer.

I woke up this morning feeling a bit more motivated, overwhelmed, but at least some of my motivation is returning. I'm in the home stretch for the semester and I just have to keep telling myself I can do it!

End of February and Juvenile Delinquents

I can't believe February is already over, meaning we're officially one-sixth into the year (which actually doesn't sound that great so I'll restate the stats at the end of March when one-third sounds like way more of an accomplishment). I'm so glad January and February are overfor another 10 months and now I only have 7 weeks left until the end of classes! I can't believe how fast time goes out here.

March looks pretty exciting for me. Most of the exciting things happen at the end of the month, but it will definitely give me something to look forward to. This month there's another Vocal Point concert, a Harry Potter marathon movie party this Friday, Rachelle is visiting from the 22nd-25th, Emily and Jacquelyn are coming out from the 27th-April 1st, and my mom's birthday is the 26th! I'm actually looking forward to March (which normally I don't really) and I've realized that because time flies by so incredibly fast right now, regardless of the month, I need to resolve to have a good time anyway.

Moving on, for my American Heritage service hours, Katelyn and I are going with a volunteer group to the Slate Canyon Youth Detention Center to do activities with some of the kids there. I'm in a group for the 10-18 year old girls from 7:00-8:00 and then I move to work with a group of 15-18 year old boys from 8:00-9:00. When I told my parents about this they sounded a little dubious about the matter, but I love it! It is such an amazing opportunity to actually work with these kids who you find out are really good kids, but they just have bad decision making skills. My favorite group is the boys group because they're at the facility longterm. (The girls are there short term and are usually waiting for a court date or something of the like). Even just going there the two times I have, the boys are really courteous and they actually want to be there and work with the volunteers. (They earn the privilege to work with volunteers so the ones that are there want to be there). The staff there constantly remind us that these boys earned their way into the detention center and that they think criminally, so watch out, and while I see the need to keep yourself safe, these boys really aren't horrible people.

Last night I was thinking about the scripture that talks about "the least of these my brethern" in Matthew and I realized that what I'm doing at the detention center is directly working with the "least of these." When I go I'm able to see these adolescent criminals as Christ sees them; they don't act like criminals when you're there and I can see that some of these boys really do want to change and that they recognize their own fallabilities and weaknesses. When I'm there just playing games and talking with them, I'm really just having fun. I've been able to make connections with a couple of them and I'm really hoping that I can in some way impact them.

Well, I must sign out for the time being--I wish I had more to blog about, but alas I'm drawing a blank. So I will go back to doing nothing at the Physics and Astronomy Department!

Lack of Buyer's Remorse

So I had quite an exciting weekend, filled with many exciting adventures, the first and most exciting of which was a trip to Borders! I love Borders and much to my dismay I hardly ever get to go because I don't have a car! Argh! However, Katelyn's sister was out of town for the weekend and so we had the car! I've always had a special place in my heart for bookstores and that special place has expanded since I don't get out to one very often. We spent an hour and a half in Borders and I could have spent so much more money than I did, but my total rang up to almost $70!*@&# While I have no problem finding merchandise to equal that amount, I am a poor college student, but the most disturbing part is that even after the cashier tells me my total, I choke and simultaneously hand over my debit card. "Swipe it!" I say. Good grief. It's a little worrying to my bank account when I have no buyer's remorse after a trip to Borders.

Moving on from my lack of second thoughts, I had quite a successful Borders run. I bought Step Ball Change by Jeanne Ray, In the Land of Second Chances by George Shaffner, Othello (for my English class and of course I buy not the cheapest version, but the one that looks the coolest), The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, and Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross for Katelyn's birthday. Another reason why I logically shouldn't have splurged as I did was because it's not like I'll have time to read them anyway. I still haven't finished any of the books I bought or received from Christmas break (much to my reader's sorrow). And I state again, I still have no regret. Oh the joys of the reading addiction . . .

After Borders we got dinner at the Panda Express (yum!) and watched an episode of "24". Then a couple of boys in our ward called us up and were wondering if we wanted to go sledding, which of course we did! It was so much fun despite the freezing cold. I only wore a pair of jeans (stupid now I realize, but I don't have any snowpants!) and a long sleeved shirt under a hoodie with a warm winter coat. Really my hands were the coldest because I spaced bringing a pair of gloves . . . stupid! Even though my pants were soaked, my legs weren't too cold because they were numb! (Well I guess that means they're cold, but I couldn't feel it!) It was crazy because my hair was falling out of my ponytail and so the snow that sprayed up into my face when I sledded down made my hair into icicles!

Saturday was especially fun because we went to the mall and did some long-awaited shopping! Katelyn bought this way cute dress that looked so amazing on the hanger, but when she tried it on later that night, it was not so cute. I hate it when that happens. We went to Charlotte Russe which is sometimes a dubious place to shop, but I found the cutest, most perfect top for me! It's blue with white polka dots all over and it's fitted through the bust and then is looser in the torso. It has a deep sweetheart neckline (so I wear it with a tank) with cute little white buttons in the middle. It was the only one left and in my size!! It was meant to be ;) The funniest part was when I went up to the cashier she rang up the top and then said to me "This top is so cute--it makes your boobs look really great!" I didn't really know how to respond to that and that wasn't my intention, however I think I consider it a fringe benefit. ;)

Well, as I started this post last Monday and am now just getting back to it Wednesday afternoon, I've completely forgotten what else I intended to blog about. Oh well, I'm sure this is plenty long enough for the time being!

Catching my Breath

Wow this past week has once again flown by! It sure is a good thing that we had a long weekend for President's Day! Last week was full of school work, book reports, computer projects, and a worthy attempt at a social life. Trying to remember what all happened last week, I can come up with a fun Valentine's Day wearing a cute skirt, finishing the intensely boring James Madison biography assignment for American Heritage, seeing two movies ("Deja Vu' and "Night at the Museum"), studying endlessly for my American Heritage midterm this week, and going on three dates (a new record for me in one week).

I couldn't help thinking last week how fast time has gone since Christmas break and now it's almost March!! Sometime's it's still hard to believe that I've been back at school and into winter semester for going on seven weeks now! I'm glad that my first round of midterms is over after the American Heritage test I'm taking tomorrow, but the next week the tests start all over again--ah! I won't be getting a respite until after finals in April . . . I just can't think about it.

The upside to constant due dates and studying and academic chaos is that once a week starts, you're in it and there's nothing you can do about it. Either you get it done or you don't. Sometimes I won't get it done and sometimes (hopefully most of the time) I will. When I think about it in terms like that, especially in weeks when I have so much going on and so much to do and think about, it simplifies my stress level so much. I can only do so much anyway and either I do it or I don't; either way, it won't be the end of the world. Sometimes I'll have to sacrifice a night out or a favorite TV show or a phone call home, but when it's simplified to either a yes or a no, a black or white situation, for me it is so much easier to handle.

Anyway, the long weekend was definitely a needed break (even though for most of the holiday I studied for American Heritage--I know, it's dominating my life). It was nice because probably over half the girls on my floor went out of town, leaving the floor nice and quiet. Brittany went to Las Vegas with some friends and all of Katelyn's roommates went elsewhere, leaving the bedrooms to ourselves!! Saturday and Sunday nights were especially fun because Katelyn and I had a sleepover in her room and I slept on her roommate's bed (note: ON the bed, not IN the bed--having someone else sleep in my bed might weird me out a bit). We watched movies and fed our "24" addiction and scheduled naps during the day. Yesterday, Katelyn's sister called us up and said that a store in Orem was having a huge sale on seasons of "24"--$15 for a season. Seriously, how could I pass that up? Normally I wouldn't care about buying the seasons, but when they're a fifth of what they normally are, I'd be crazy not to! I got the first season and plan on starting it as soon as Katelyn and I finish the watching the fifth.

Well, my brain is fried and it's only Tuesday, but I'll push through the rest of the week, remembering that regardless of whether I want it to or not, the week will fly by and I'll either get it all done or I won't!
