roommate rant

Is the dishwasher a recent cleaning revolution? Is is one of those things like big sunglasses that didn't become popular until fairly recently? Is there somewhere in the continental United States where dishwashers are the "new" thing, the new appliance which everyone has a hard time figuring out? . . . I didn't think so.

I always thought the dishwasher was a staple appliance for those of my generation. And why shouldn't it be a staple? I mean, all you have to do is rinse off your dishes, put them in the dishwasher, and turn the dishwasher on. It's really that simple: no gimmicks, no tricky instructions, no ridiculous plastic ties like Barbies have to strap them in the box.

So, if the dishwasher is such an easy and user-friendly appliance, then why in the world do people have such a hard time using it? It's a machine that says, "Hey, let me do your dishes for you. All you have to do is load and unload--it's that easy!" It's like we won the dish-cleaning lottery; it's like having a personal maid but not taking advantage of it.

Why can't roommates just load their dishes into the dishwasher? Why?!

Good question. Very annoying.

I had the feeling that I was taking the trash to the dumpster an inordinate amount of times per week (considering the fact that three of us lived in my apartment), and when I confronted my roomies about it, one of them actually said, "Where is the dumpster?" Guess who had never taken out the trash in 3 months? Well, it WASN'T ME!

I'm so sorry...I feel your pain! At least yours know how to use it. Last year I had a roommate that asked how to use it and when we told her she ran it without soap! Yeah...like the dishwasher just magically has soap in it! My goodness!

Oh dear, what is to become of the rising generation if it includes girls like Karen's former roommate? Distressing, indeed.

John and Sarah don't seem to be catching onto the whole dishwasher idea, either. Like, how difficult is it to put your dirty dishes into the dishwasher instead of just in the sink? So frustrating!! Oh, and NEWS FLASH: it doesn't automatically unload itself, kids.

Man that drove me crazy when I had roommates. I am so a neat freak that I couldn't just leave dishes or the floor un-vacuumed so I know I did way more cleaning than any of my roommates combined but it was worth it to me so I could be comfortable in my apartment.
Sorry roommates can be hard. That was one of the best parts of getting married, no more roommates or coming home to a messy house!

I never understand it when people don't load their dishes right away or not at all. Apparently they don't mind living in filth or perhaps they enjoy piling up more work to do later.

I used to have a sign in a page protector that I would put in my clean sink. One side said "please load your dishes" and the other said "please empty the dish washer".

My husband and his boss would load their dishes, but they never emptied the dishwasher. lol

lol, ah, the joys of college roommates!
I remember all too well doing others dishes. But I never did have a dishwasher at all in college. I didn't have one until we moved here to Colorado.
But I still don't think it is that hard to take too seconds to scrub the dish you just ate off of!

At least you have a dishwasher.

Dishwashers are even more appreciated when you don't have one! We didn't have one in Paris or in one of our young married apartments. Yikes.

Roommate issues can be frustrating indeed.
