So, here's the thing. I need a job. Ideally an editing or writing one.In fact, I really to want to work. I've been looking everywhere. And I've accepted the likely possibility that I won't find something directly dealing in my favorite field. I've had a few interviews. But nothing has panned out yet.
And then I wonder if I'm being too picky. Because, you see, I really don't want to work in retail. I'm okay with reception or an office job. I've done that before. I worked my way through school and then really hard to do well in school. I graduated from a prestigious university with a marketable degree and marketable skills. I don't want to settle. I really don't.
But I still need a job.
Then, what if I'm just being a job diva? Because if I settle too much I'll wonder what the point of college was if I don't do anything with it. (That mentality hints at drama queen.) Has a college degree made me stuck up? Should I settle, at least temporarily? How much settling is too much? How do I know where to draw the line between validating my education/skills and flat snobbery?
So. I need a job. But it's not as simple as that. So, that's the thing.

I know how you feel. Working retail can be kinda blech at times.
My advice would be to take a lesser job. Just for now. Nothing permanent. Just something to help pay the bills while you look for work that you really want to do. Its not the most appealing option no. But sometimes we just have to grit our teeth and get through it.
I understand your dilemma all too well, Charlotte. Nate searched for a job for a very long time and we often wondered if he should start seeking more jobs that weren't in his field.
If you absolutely MUST get a job right now, I think you would be okay to take a non-writing job to ease your mind. Nate ended up taking a part-time job, that way he felt he could still make a full-time job out of searching for something in his profession.
Who told you BYU was prestigious?
;-)
Don't be surprised if a "lesser" job opens unexpected doors for better, rewarding opportunities. (Of course, this coming from a man who worked as a garbage man. Three times. And a minimum wage job as a mortuary assistant.) It's not uncommon for great, entrepreneurial ideas to come from the mind of a bright college graduate working the "lesser" job. Bottom line: take some of the pressure off yourself and really enjoy the next several weeks.
Oh, I have been meaning to comment on this post. It is a dilemma, isn't it? This is what I think: do not do retail. You have a college degree. Be a receptionist or a secretary--that's fine. But, please, please don't do retail.
Also, Charlotte, I work for WGU, and we are looking for some temp editors right now. And we have some girls leaving b/c they are prego, so my boss asked her today to give her some recommendations. If you would be interested, text me. I think you have my number, right? If not, email me with your information and I will recommend you.
Good luck in your search, friend!
I love Dad's advice! Love love love it. And you should too. Don't feel like you have to fulfill your full employment potential with your first job. Let your story be one of exciting progress and growth. You'll be led to opportunities to use more and more of your seriously impressive skills as you keep working and praying. I'm so excited to see where you go.
Hmmm. This is a hard choice. I say if you need to do the retail route, work at a bookstore. That way you will at least be surrounded with things that you love. In the mean time, best wishes with the job hunt
I completely understand what you are saying! In one month I will be done with my student teaching and will have a college degree and teaching license. Where am I going to get a teaching job in November? No where! I want a job, but I don't really want to be a college graduate working at a grocery store. You will find something! I have faith in you!
Everyone has good advice for you, especially Dad.
Love your dad's comment. And the one about working in a bookstore temporarily isn't bad, either!
I think it's cool that you have time to just have a great day at home! You haven't had time for that in the last 4 years, so enjoy it.
Are there any publishing houses around there? Surely, they need a cute, stylish word hog like you!
Bookstore isn't a bad idea, and it's said that it is always easier to get a job when you have a job. Okay then, bookstore it is. Work in the dictionary department and rock.
